Sodium Hexametaphosphate is a colorless transparent liquid flake or white granular crystal.It is an aggregate of sodium polyphosphate polymers based on repeated NaPO3 units.
It is a water-soluble polyphosphate glass consisting of long cycles of polyphosphate chains.

The principle of softening hard water with sodium hexametaphosphate is that calcium ion Ca++ or magnesium ion Mg++, which causes hardness in water, enters sodium metaphosphate molecules and becomes a very stable soluble complex: Na2{Ca2(PO3)6} and Na2{Mg2(PO3)6}, the Ca++ or MG2 ++ in this complex, is not easy to run out, so it will not make Ca++ or Mg++ encounter dye or soap precipitate or Caking, which can.
