OS is an effective oil-soluble UVB absorber and is a colorless to pale yellow liquid in appearance.
It can absorb ultraviolet rays in the 230-300nm band, and can be used as a UVB absorber in sunscreen makeup.
Although octyl salicylate has less UV-absorbing ability, it is less toxic than most other sunscreens and is inexpensive, so it is a more commonly used type of UV absorber.
Applications
In the cosmetic industry, it can be used as a good solvent for crystalline oil-soluble UV absorbers. At the same time, it can be used as an auxiliary UVB absorber in high SPF formulations to increase SPF value.
In industrial plastics and inks, it can be used as an anti-fading agent.
