Applications

Methyldopa is a prodrug that can pass through the blood-brain barrier. When it enters the central nervous system, it is metabolized into norepinephrine similar to norepinephrine under the action of aromatic amino acid decarboxylase and dopamine-β-hydroxylase. The pseudotransmitter alpha-methylnorepinephrine, which interacts with central postsynaptic membrane receptors, inhibits the egress of sympathetic nerve impulses, resulting in a drop in blood pressure.

Indications: Treatment of hypertension, more suitable for renal hypertension and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
